CosmoConifer

Independent game studio · Las Vegas

Small studio.
Very large galaxy.

CosmoConifer is me, Anthony Ellis, and a project I've been chipping away at since 2016. Everything here is made by one person: code, art, and the parts in between that nobody warns you about.

One game, and it's a big one.

Solvane: The Iron Reach

  • Top-down space sim
  • Factory building
  • Tower defense
  • Procedural galaxy

Fly out into an infinite procedurally generated galaxy, find asteroids worth breaking, and haul what you pull out of them back to a base you built yourself. That base is a factory — power, conduits, processing, drones — and it needs turrets, because something will come for it. Weapons get built rather than bought, and the ship is yours to configure.

Nothing else announced

Solvane has my full attention. When there's a second project worth showing, it turns up here first.

Smaller things

Simulation experiments and browser toys live on my developer portfolio at anthonyellis.dev rather than under the studio.

The studio

CosmoConifer is a one-person operation in Las Vegas. I'm self-taught. I started in GameMaker in 2014 after opening it to see what was inside, and I've been writing GML on and off ever since. Solvane began in August 2016 as an argument with friends about whether I could build something with real depth in GameMaker. I was wrong about how hard it would be, and I'm still here.

The name is two things I like: space, and trees. There's no deeper story than that.

How the work happens

Nights and weekends, around a day job. Progress comes in bursts with long quiet stretches between them — I've taken breaks from Solvane as long as nine months and come back to it every time. That's the honest shape of a solo project, and I'd rather say so than pretend there's a roadmap with dates on it.

I build the systems first and make them look right afterwards. Most of what takes the longest is invisible in a screenshot: chunked world streaming, save formats, the pathing that keeps drones from piling into each other.
